Major and minor scales: the foundation of tonality in Western music

What is a musical scale?

Definition

A musical scale is an ordered sequence of notes arranged according to a specific pattern of intervals. Scales provide the fundamental melodic and harmonic material for composing, improvising and understanding music. Each scale contains seven different notes plus the octave (which repeats the first note an octave higher).

Melodic Material

Melodies are constructed using the notes of a scale. Knowing the scale helps you to create effective melodies.

Harmonic Material

Chords are constructed by stacking thirds from the notes of the scale. Each scale produces a specific family of chords.

Tonale Centre

The first note of the scale (the tonic) is the harmonic centre of gravity around which all the music revolves.

Historical Background

The system of major and minor scales that we use today evolved gradually. In the Middle Ages, the ‘ecclesiastical modes’ (Dorian, Phrygian, etc.) were used. It was not until the 17th and 18th centuries, with Bach and Baroque music, that the major–minor system (the tonal system) became dominant, allowing for modulations and more complex harmonies. Bach’s *Well-Tempered Clavier* demonstrated the possibility of playing in all 24 keys.

The Major Scale

The Sound of the Major Scale

The major scale is the most important and fundamental scale in Western music. It has a bright, joyful and stable character. It is the scale on which the whole of tonal music theory is based, and serves as the reference point for understanding all other scales.

Major Scale Pattern

The interval pattern is the ‘formula’ that defines the major scale. This pattern works when starting from any note:

Internal Structure

Note that the semitones (S) fall between the 3rd and 4th degrees and the 7th and 8th degrees. It is the positioning of these semitones that gives the major scale its characteristic sound. All other adjacent intervals are whole tones.

C Major Scale – The Simplest Scale

The Do major scale is the simplest because it uses only the white keys on the piano (no accidents: no sharps, no flats).

Enharmonic Notes

Some keys are enharmonic (they sound the same but are written differently): F♯ major = G♭ major (6 sharps = 6 flats), C♯ major = D♭ major (7 sharps = 5 flats). In practice, the version with fewer accidents is preferred.

The Scale Degrees and Their Functions

List of Ranks

Each note in a scale has a number (degree) and a specific name based on its harmonic function. These names are derived from classical tonal harmony and describe how each note ‘functions’ in relation to the tonic.

The Minor Scales

The Sound of the Minor Scale

The minor scale has a darker, more melancholic and introspective character than the major scale. The fundamental difference lies in the lowered third degree (a minor third instead of a major third), which radically alters the emotional colour of the scale. There are three forms of the minor scale, each with a specific use.

1. Natural Minor Scale

The simplest and ‘purest’ form of the minor scale. It is identical to the major scale but starts on the 6th scale degree. It has a natural, relaxed sound.

2. Harmonic Minor Scale

The 7th degree is raised by a semitone (G → G♯ in A minor) to create a leading tone that resolves strongly to the tonic. This scale is used primarily in harmony because it produces a major dominant chord (V) rather than a minor one.

G♯ (raised 7th degree) is the leading tone

Augmented Second

The interval F → G♯ (between the 6th and 7th degrees) is an augmented second (3 semitones), which produces a characteristic ‘exotic’ or ‘oriental’ sound typical of flamenco, klezmer and Middle Eastern music.

Why Does It Exist?

In the natural minor scale, the chord on the V degree would be minor (Em in A minor). But a minor chord has little tension. By raising the 7th degree, the V degree becomes major (E major), creating a strong dominant tension that resolves effectively to the tonic (V → i). This is why it is called ‘harmonic’ – it resolves the harmonic problem of the dominant.

3. Melodic Minor Scale

Ascending: raised 6th and 7th (like the major scale, but with a lowered 3rd)
Descending: returns to the natural minor scale (natural 6th and 7th)
Mainly used for melody as it avoids the augmented second interval found in the harmonic minor scale, making melodic lines flow more smoothly.

Why Does It Change When Going Downhill?

In classical music, in the ascending passage, the leading tone (G♯) is needed for the resolution to the tonic, so the 6th (F♯) is also raised to avoid the augmented second. When descending, the melody moves away from the tonic, so the leading tone is not needed, and the natural form is used to maintain the minor character. In modern jazz, the ascending form is often used in both directions.

Relative and Parallel Scales

Relative Pitches

Every major scale has a relative minor scale which consists of exactly the same notes (and therefore has the same key signature). The relative minor scale begins on the 6th scale degree of the major scale, which is a minor third below (3 semitones).

Character: Cheerful, joyful, stable

Rule for Finding the Relative Minimum

Major → Minor: Go down a minor third (3 semitones)
Minor → Major: Go up a minor third (3 semitones)
Examples: G major ↔ E minor | D major ↔ B minor | F major ↔ D minor

Parallel Tones

Parallel scales are the major and minor scales that start from the same tonic but have different notes. For example: C major and C minor are parallel.

Differences between parallel lines

Comparison between C major and C minor (natural): the 3rd, 6th and 7th degrees are lowered by a semitone in the minor scale. These three notes are what determine the major or minor ‘colour’. The relative keys have different key signatures (C major = 0, C minor = 3♭).

The Circle of the Fifths

What is the Circolo delle Quinte?

The Circle of Fifths is a diagram that organises all 12 keys according to their harmonic relationships. Moving clockwise (ascending by fifths), each key adds a sharp. Moving anti-clockwise (descending by fifths / ascending by fourths), each key adds a flat.

Each step adds a flat. The order of the flats is always: B♭ – E♭ – A♭ – D♭ – G♭ – C♭ – F♭

  • Save key signatures

  • Composition: opposing colours on the colour wheel create maximum contrast

Step-by-Step Procedure
  1. Choose the tonic (starting note). Example: E
  2. Apply the T-T-S-T-T-T-S pattern starting from the tonic
  3. Count the semitones for each interval (T=2, S=1)
Example: Construction of E major
  1. Start: E
  2. E + T (2 semitones) = F♯
  3. F♯ + T (2 semitones) = G♯
  4. G♯ + S (1 semitone) = A
  5. A + T (2 semitones) = B
  6. B + T (2 semitones) = C♯
  7. C♯ + T (2 semitones) = D♯

Building a Minor Scale

Three Methods
Method 1: Natural Minor Scale Pattern

Apply the T-S-T-T-S-T-T pattern starting from the tonic. Example: D minor = D – E – F – G – A – B♭ – C – D

Method 2: From the relative major

Find the relative major (the minor third above), work it out, then start from the 6th degree. Example: for D minor → relative major = F major (F-G-A-B♭-C-D-E-F) → start from D.

Method 3: From the Major Parallel

Build the major scale with the same tonic note, then lower the 3rd, 6th and 7th degrees. Example: D major (D-E-F♯-G-A-B-C♯-D) → lower the 3rd, 6th and 7th degrees → D minor (D-E-F-G-A-B♭-C-D)
