Understanding the duration of notes, rests and the rhythmic structure of music

What is rhythm?

Rhythm is the element of music that organises sounds over time. Whilst pitch determines which sounds are produced, rhythm determines when and for how long they are played.

Rhythmic notation uses specific symbols to indicate the duration of each note and rest, enabling musicians all over the world to read and perform music with precise timing.

Importance: Rhythm is considered the most fundamental element of music. Even without melody or harmony, rhythm alone can create music (as in percussion).

Note Values

Each note has a specific duration that determines how long it should be played. The most common note values are organised into a binary hierarchy, where each value is exactly half that of the previous one.

Details on the Most Commonly Used Values

Quarter note

Use: The quarter note is the fundamental rhythmic unit in most music.

In 4/4 time: Represents 1 beat (the ‘strong’ beat)

Typical of: Rock, pop, jazz, classical music

Eighth note

Usage: Creates faster movements and subdivides the beats.

In 4/4 time: 2 eighth notes = 1 beat

Typical of: Fast melodies, walking bass in jazz, shuffle rhythms

𝅗𝅥 Half note (Half Note)

Use: Long notes, often used for slow melodies or harmonic voicings.

In 4/4 time: Lasts 2 beats

Rests

Rests indicate moments of silence in music and are just as essential as the notes themselves. Every note value has a corresponding rest of exactly the same duration.

Silence is a fundamental part of music: it creates space, tension, breathing room and articulation. As the composer Claude Debussy said: ‘Music is the space between the notes’.

Mnemonic trick: A whole note rest (𝄻) hanging BELOW the staff like a ‘stalactite’. A half note rest (𝄼) resting ABOVE the staff like a ‘hat’.

Duration Modifiers: Dot and Tie

A dot placed after a note increases its duration by half its original value.

Common examples:
  • Half note bet (𝅗𝅥.) = 3 beats (2 + 1)
  • Quarter note (♩.) = 1.5 beats (1 + 0.5)
  • Eighth note (♪.) = 0.75 beats (0.5 + 0.25)
Formula: Episode duration = Original duration × 1.5
Tie

A tie connects two or more notes of the same pitch, adding their durations together. The note is played only once and held for the total duration.

Uses:
  • Notes that cross bar lines
  • Creating impossible durations with single notes
  • Syncopation and complex time signatures

Colon

Less commonly, the ellipsis (..) adds half plus a quarter of the original value.

Example: Half note with a colon (𝅗𝅥..) = 2 + 1 + 0.5 = 3.5 beats

Used mainly in Baroque and Classical music.

Time Signatures

The time signature (or metre) appears at the beginning of the piece and determines the rhythmic structure of the entire composition. It specifies how many beats there are in each bar and which note value represents one beat.

This is essential for understanding the rhythmic structure and the sense of ‘movement’ in the piece.

How to Read the Time Display

Simple Tenses vs Compound Tenses

Simple Tenses

Each beat is divided into two parts (binary). The numerator is typically 2, 3 or 4.

Examples:

  • 2/4: 2 beats per bar (marches)
  • 3/4: 3 beats per bar (waltz)
  • 4/4: 4 beats per bar (rock, pop)
Compound Tenses

Each beat is divided into three parts (in triple time). The numerator is typically 6, 9 or 12.

Examples:

  • 6/8: 2 beats of 3 eighth notes (ballads)
  • 9/8: 3 beats of 3 eighth notes
  • 12/8: 4 beats of 3 eighth notes (blues, shuffle)

Tempo and BPM (Beats Per Minute)

The tempo of a track refers to the speed at which it is played. It is measured in BPM (beats per minute), i.e. the number of beats in a minute.

Tempo has a profound influence on the emotional character of a piece: slow tempos evoke calm or melancholy, whilst fast tempos create energy and excitement.

The Metronome

The metronome is an essential tool for developing a precise and consistent sense of time. It produces regular clicks at the set tempo (BPM).

Benefits of using a metronome:
  • Develops rhythmic precision and internal timing
  • Prevents unintentional acceleration or deceleration
  • Improve your ability to play in an ensemble
  • It allows you to monitor your progress in terms of speed
Practice Tip: Always start practising a new piece at a slower tempo (60–70 per cent of the final tempo) with the metronome. Only gradually increase the BPM once you can play it without mistakes at that speed.

Tips for Studying Rhythm

  5. Transcribe rhythms by listening to songs you like
  6. Practise polyrhythms: 3 against 2, 4 against 3

  2. Starting too fast – learn slowly and correctly first
  3. Confusing simple and compound time signatures (4/4 vs 12/8)
  4. Neglecting pauses – silence is part of the rhythm
  5. Do not hear the internal subdivision (e.g. sixteenth notes in a piece written in quarter notes)
  6. Speed up through the tricky sections – keep a steady pace
